With Remembrance Day coming up this week, it seemed appropriate to focus on a hidden treasure that has its origins in World War 1. These crew members actually had a fairly good survival rate – much better than contemporaries fighting on the ground or in combat aircraft. Nevertheless it must have taken some guts to sit in a small carriage beneath a large envelope of explosive hydrogen… with a top speed of 53 mph.
The early 17th-century for this edition of Ashford’s Hidden Treasures, and an object which was very nearly lost to the borough a few years ago but has now thankfully been returned. Many thanks to #NationalLotteryHeritageFund for funding this project.
